But you have a CG solution that could grow into a full cg+key/fill server with an upgraded license, a USB dongle, and an AJA I/O. Xpression can write stills to the still store of the Carbonite, then you can key them. I have no clue what the pricing is, but there's a workflow between Carbonite and Xpression. Xpression is the best fit, but it'll set you back.

There's a lot of power in the Plus frame. I've done shows with splits/2 boxes and audience-visible monitors using a single MLE Carbonite. Even if you are the miniMEs on the other frames are probably up to the task. Unless you're feeding several auxiliary displays I'm not sure why you'd need that. The Carbonite Black frame adds another MLE and more I/O. The Carbonite Multimedia frame adds a couple HDMI inputs if you need them. If you have a line cut and you're looking to change some auxiliary displays using macros or Dashboard could save some cash rather than getting another stripe on the panel. That would allow a computer to control a second MLE. It might be worth noting you could use Dashboard with Carbonite. A minor league hockey team I help out suddenly got 4 miniMEs once upon a time. If your hardware supports it they'll give it to you. With Ross you get free switcher updates in perpetuity. The Black panels work with the all frames, so don't assume you need a Black panel for it. Add a Carbonite Black 1 or Carbonite Black 2 panel.

It also has the 2nd MLE that you could license if you need it. The frame has 24 in, so you can license the other 8 inputs if you end up needing them. That gets you 16 in, and 8 out with frame syncs and some format converters. The Carbonite Plus with one MLE licensed and a one MLE panel can be had for about $20k. A lot of Black Magic switchers have both of those features. The other big thing is a lot of them have frame syncs on every input, which simplifies your life quite a bit. The benefit there is you might be able to take your audio mixer, feed it into the switcher, and then get an 'embedded' signal (either SDI or HDMI) that you can easily feed to a web streaming system, since a lot of streaming boxes don't seem to have analog audio inputs on them nowadays.

You can even find a lot of switchers with a few channels of audio. Roland and Panasonic make some smaller integrated switchers. A lot of churches use Black Magic products. Now, you can still find a good video switcher for the price.

You are right, though, it is something to aspire to, because it really gets your foot in the door at the professional broadcast level for a really good price. And you won't find broadcast-grade switchers for $15k. It essentially is the "budget broadcast switcher" on the market. The Carbonite Black is, off the top of my head, around $55k, and it is a great value for the price.

Not trying to be a downer, just want to provide some perspective - You're not going to find anything with the same features for $15k.
